Wow ! I’ve been really reflecting on my life lessons over the past year.

One major lesson has been rising above the negativity of others. I have had folks around me that were constantly complaining, judging, criticizing and circumstances would have it that I had to be around them. I couldn’t avoid them.

At first I was like really frustrated by it. I mean really frustrated.

However, as difficult a lesson as it was to to understand I began to realize that it was perfect for my personal character development.

So far this month I have been deeply touched by the celebration of lives who have moved on….

Chunyi Li who is my Spring Forest Chi Gong teacher had a family member move on with his life early this month. His   father peacefully moved on with his life on Sunday, August 3, at 2:00 a.m., CDT. His family held a wonderful “celebration of a beautiful life” right after his death. Master Lin was not able to go home to China to attend; but his wife, their two children, and he were there in spirit and, by cell phone, were able to follow each part of the process of the celebration being held in China.

Master Lin had a unexpected communication that day: he burned incense for his father in his yard here in Minnesota and, almost instantly, it began to rain. The incense burned all the way to the end, and when it went out naturally…the rain stopped.
fancy shawl dance, ladies fancy dance, pow wow dance, butterfly dance, Cherokee dance, Crow dance

Every August 14th I now dance the Butterfly Dance-

This dance is an expression of renewal, and to give thanks for new seasons, new life, and new beginnings.  A woman I greatly admired Greek Gray http://www.greekgrayleukemiafoundation.org  moved on August 14, 2006.

As I was thinking of the celebration of Independence Day in the U.S. tomorrow…I thought are we really financially independent ??? Am I ??? Well, here are some things we can do to make that happen !
1. SET A GOAL TO CUT YOUR EXPENSES by some
concrete number - 10%, 20%, 30%, even 50%, and
set up a plan to do it. Reducing costs is the
fastest way to increase your income–faster than making more money..

2. LOOK AT CASH YOU ARE WASTING without enjoying
its benefits, such as lights that get left on,
computers that stay on day and night, “phantom
loads,” like microwave clocks that use more
energy than the microwave itself. If you get to
know your electrical meter, and record the
setting before and after you shut off those
phantom loads, you’ll have concrete proof that you are saving money.

3. Set up a THREE TIER SYSTEM for purchases: a)
necessities; b) conveniences; and c) other. Put
everything you buy in one of these categories for
a week, and examine the list. For example, if you
buy clothing, you might have bought socks and new
fancy shoes. While most people would put the
socks under “a” or “b,” most of us would consider
the fancy shoes “other” unless they are a
necessity for work. The Great Spending
Contraction has begun. Get far enough ahead of
it, that you aren’t bit in the behind.

Last week I spent 4 days with some incredible people in Orangeburg, SC including Andrea Yelton, Noreen Wingate, Dale Carlson-Bebout, Tracy Brower, Blair Haley, Charlita Earle, LaShaun Crosby, Hydi Kalmin, Cornell Wesley, Marvin Boomer and Sharon Williams. Each one is committed to making a difference in the lives of others.   Together we helped students create personal statements for their college applications. There were moments I felt like I wanted to pull my hair out. However, we kept pressing on, encouraging the student to write and rewrite and write and rewrite and write and rewrite….

One of my mentors, Kevin Bracy shared the following thought with me…

They say, the best basketball players in the NBA make only about half of their shots, but they KEEP working on their shot.
